Seeking to Be a Craftsman of Prayer (part one)

July 7th, 2010

It is fascinating to watch a craftsman in action. They have great skills, so much so that their craft seems to just flow from their hands. There is a wonderful transition of the material from its natural state to where it becomes a finished product. Craftsmen create wonderful things and they give us a glimpse at the ultimate craftsman, God. He creates with a flair that a human craftsman can only envy. A look at creation reveals God’s skill and imagination. He is the model for all craftsmen; they all should long to be like Him. In prayer this same pattern is true, Jesus is the ultimate craftsman and we should all long to be like Him. We should long to be a craftsman of prayer.

The craftsman’s life is one of growing and learning; working to become more adept at their craft. In all aspects of life we should be doing the same, growing and learning. This was true for Jesus, as He walked this Earth. He grew in wisdom and stature.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Luke 2:52 (NKJV)

Christian growth comprises a wide range of subjects, covering every aspect of life; this includes prayer. In prayer the Holy Spirit works to take us from a novice to a craftsman of prayer. This growth is directed by and taught by the Holy Spirit, but it requires the participation of a willing Christian.

We can develop in prayer; the first step is to recognize the possibility of growth. Those who are satisfied with how they pray, seldom grow. Those who think their current practice of prayer is all there is, seldom grow. However, those who long to grow, those who long to be more like Jesus, those who seek training by the Holy Spirit, will grow.

You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

Nehemiah 9:20 (NKJV)

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:12-13 (NKJV)

The Hedge and Care

March 10th, 2010

The hedge and wall is a good picture of the care that is needed for the protection of the heart. Just like a field that is not protected, so the unprotected heart will have problems. The heart is very important. The Bible, as in the book of Proverbs, has dozens of verses about the heart and its great value. Just like other things of great value, the heart must be protected. One of the keys to success in the Christian life and in prayer is the careful care and feeding of the heart.

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

The word translated, keep, in this verse means to guard. The command is to guard our heart; guard is to protect, maintain, and obey.  We are to guard our heart; we are to protect our heart from evil. In addition, guarding is to maintain our relationship with God and to obey God. The reason for the command is also included here, from the heart comes those things we need for life. Guarding our heart is important; the danger comes when the hedge or wall is damaged or inadequate. The Devil is looking for ways to attack Christians and destroy their work and testimony. He is searching for gaps in their hedge.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)

Many Christians struggle in dealing with attacks of the Devil. They work at walking through life, but too often there are attacks. When Jesus was tempted by the Devil, Jesus over came the Devil by the Word. Matthew’s Gospel mentions that after he had tempted Jesus, the Devil left Him until an opportune time. Christians, with gaps in their hedges, with parts of their walls down, present opportune times to the Devil. He is always finding openings through which to attack them. We need to fill the gaps and build up our walls so this does not happen to us. We must not be like the nation of Israel and fail to deal with our hedge and walls.

You have not gone up into the gaps to build a wall for the house of Israel to stand in battle on the day of the Lord.

Ezekiel 13:5 (NKJV)

Success in the Christian life requires our dealing with the hedge and wall around our heart. A productive prayer life also requires protecting our heart. A strong and effect hedge around our heart, protects our heart and gives us opportunities to pray effectively.

Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.

1 Thessalonians 3:11-13 (NKJV)

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:6 (NKJV)

Part of a prayer ministry is to stand in the gap for the land. This is a ministry that is so important and necessary today. Unfortunately few are able to stand in the gap. Like the man without a belt, who can do nothing else, having to hold up his pants, it is hard to stand in the gap for the land, if we are constantly attacked through the gaps in our personal life. Until we deal with the gaps in our hedges and walls, we limit our effectiveness in prayer.

So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.

Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV)

God continues to seek men and women who will make a wall and stand in the gap on the behalf of the land; that is for nations and peoples. However, to be effective workmen standing in the gap for nations, we must be careful to maintain the hedge around our personal heart. Then we can effectively stand in prayer for others. God is seeking, will He find someone? Will He find you? Today is the day to check your hedge. Is it solid? Are there gaps that need repair? Let the Holy Spirit show you areas where you need to do repair work. Let Him show you areas where you need to build up the hedge. Let Him show you areas that need improvement. Let Him show you what to do to make the repairs. Do what you must do to make them and make your hedge secure and strong.

How is your Hedge?

Who Are You?

There are two kinds of people: those who say to God,

“Thy will be done,”

and those to whom God says, “All right, then, have it your way.”

Confidence in Him!

November 9th, 2009

In the 1970s as a member of the US Air Force, my duty station was Wiesbaden, Germany. My mother and father came to visit me. We spent a lovely two weeks visiting many of the famous sites and towns of Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Netherlands. While we were in Amsterdam, we stumbled on a celebration. In the main square, we notice that the Dutch flag was flying over the queen’s palace. We knew this meant she was in residence. We also notice people setting up barricades blocking off part of the square. Soon bands and military groups arrived. Crowds gathered and we moved up against the barricades. We decide to stay and see what was going to happen.

We had stumbled onto a celebration in remembrance of the Dutch resistance in World War II. The bands played, men and women marched, and the Queen came and placed a huge wreath on the monument to the faithful efforts of these men and women. It was quite a sight, made even more spectacular as the Queen of the Netherlands walked right in front of us. We could have reached out and touched the Queen who had indeed been in residence in her palace.

The palaces and castles of Europe are some of the many famous sites everyone goes to see, just as we did. One of the first things most Americans would mention when describing Europe is the castles. The castle is a symbol of the region. It was for centuries central to life in Europe. Behind its walls, people were safe from predators, bandits, and armies. Any one who would conquer a region had to undermine, breakthrough, or in some way overcome the walls. The king and all those with him were safe and secure as long as the walls remained sound. The castle was important, but in the Christian faith, there is more than a castle for our confidence.

The world places its confidence in many things; these range from the silly to the sublime. For example, people have absolute confidence in a red piece of metal that says STOP. Our confidence is so strong we will drive through an intersection positive the other car coming to the intersection will stop. We have many other confidences, many we do not think about, but are important in life. Sometimes we get into trouble because our confidences are unfounded and fail us; like the car that runs through a stop sign.

The castle for the Christian life is Jesus Christ. In Him we can have great confidence. There was protection, provision, and safety for those in a strong castle. However, history is filled with examples when the secure castle walls fail to protect, but in Jesus Christ we can have complete confidence. There is protection, provision, and safety for those in the castle of Christ.

Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: “For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 10:35-39 (NKJV)

Through out the centuries castles have faced attacks by many forces. Battle after battle the castle had to stand firm. Like wise Christians face many battles and attacks. These come in many forms. Some are overt, for example our bothers and sisters in Christ who are dying for the faith in some countries today. Other attacks are more subtle. These are like attacks where the enemy would attempt to undermine the walls of the castle. This type of attack seeks to bring a breach to the walls by weakening and undermining the soundness of the foundation of the structure.

The undermining type of attack is an effort to destroy our faith and beliefs. For example, the so called philosophies and thoughts of great thinkers is this type of attack. Many of these seek to declare God is dead, to undercut the authority of the Bible, or to challenge the Book of Genesis and our origins. In this type of attack, the attack is waged at one subject, say, for instance the Book of Genesis, but the goal of the attack is an effort to weaken men and women’s confidence. If Genesis is not reliable, this undermines confidence in the entire Bible.

When the enemy attacks on an issue, especially one close to home, the walls of our castle must be strong enough to withstand the attack. Our confidence in Christ must not fail. If the walls fail, we think or say things like, God loves some, but does not love me, God heals some, but not me, or God provides for some, but not me. God answers prayers for some, but not for me. If this happens then our faith has failed.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Another means of attacking the castle is to batter the gates. The ram was a designed to break down the gates, the weak point in the wall of the castle. Christians face battering rams every day. Like the rams of old, these just pound on you day and night. Western society has many rams. They may be subtle, but are effect nonetheless. There is a barrage of words spoken of doubt, fear, and death. For example, most advertisements warn of impending disaster for all who fail to use their product. Support for every cause is whipped up by calling on fear of death and destruction. We must counter these attacks standing on God’s Word; for example this verse.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)

In addition, there is the attack that we have seen so often in election years, but used in many areas of life; the so-called expert. This attack is base on an exchange that has been made in Western society; we have exchanged knowledge for opinion. As Os Guinness has said, “There is a huge gap between knowledge and opinion—and ours is an age that is short on knowledge and long on opinions (and the cult of statistics and opinion polls).” The attack is this barrage of ideas and opinions, not based on the facts of the Bible and often not supported by any facts. They pound on a person like the ram on the castle door, to breakdown weak points in our faith. These experts claim to have knowledge, or more often than not, the claim to have the truth on an issue. What they espouse as truth is just opinion or polling data. Their claims are false and not based on truth. Truth is found in Jesus Christ; He is the truth.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”.

John 14:6 (NKJV)

Attacks also come over the walls; like a flurry of arrows shot from bows. The arrows of words fly though the sky circumventing the walls with their reign of death. Words of death and destructions, words of catastrophe and calamity, words dearth and doom, these are the arrows of the enemy who has sworn to kill, steal and destroy.

He comes with negative words. His goal is to fill our ears with negative words. They fill the airways and byways, the media, and neighborhood. Our hearts and minds can become filled with these deadly arrows; with negative words. They are enough to make us grow we wary with the constant barrage. It is so important today, that we remember to not grow weary.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)

Under the walls, though the walls, and over the walls attacks come. The goal of the attacks is destruction of our faith. Like the castle of old, there are walls, but for the Christian these walls are our stand with Christ Jesus and our confidence in Him. By His saving grace and power He is able to protect us in the midst of any and all attacks. His full and complete salvation is for us today and is capable of meeting and exceeding our every need. We can depend on His provision. He is the wall of our castle.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Ephesians 6:10 (NKJV)

You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:1 (NKJV)

The promise of the Father is salvation, which has been described as “nothing missing, nothing broken”. Our confidence stands firm on His ability and willingness to perform. In prayer and intersession, just as in personal and corporate life, our confidence must be in Him. The enemy will provide us with help in casting away our confidence, if we let him. But those who endure, those who will not cast away their confidence, they will receive the promise.

Let nothing undermine, breakthrough, or overwhelm our confidence in Him. We must withstand the attack, the undermining, the battering ram, the arrows, and every device of attack designed to breakdown our walls. Our job is to stand firm in Christ Jesus.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Ephesians 6:13-14 (NKJV)

A Higher Call

October 20th, 2009

My dad was a craftsman. He could build cabinets and furniture that were family heirlooms from the day he delivered the piece. When I worked with him I learned to build things, but dad did not build, he crafted. He worked to make every aspect of the piece perfect. He would joke, “We strive for absolute, but perfect is good enough!” Today there are few craftsmen around in any field. People want things quick and cheap. Even in much of Europe the old tradition of great craftsmanship is yielding to the new wave of quick and cheap. People just will not pay the price for craftsmanship.

Prayer has succumbed to this same malady. People want prayer to be quick and cheap. If prayer is going to cost, then people are not interested. They want prayer, but once people see that effective prayer isn’t quick and cheap, they look for something else and leave this key part of the Christian life on the shelf. Only when faced with dire emergency will they even consider prayer. In far too many places, the church is in a sad state and one key cause of this condition is a lack of prayer. Very simply put, we have drawn away from prayer, effective prayer, and the church has suffered for it.

Throughout history there have been men and women who were willing to pray. They would give of themselves, giving the time and effort needed to pray. They would give both physically and spiritually. There is nothing sacred about rising early for prayer. A man can pray at any time of the day or night, but for most people if there is no early morning prayer, there is no prayer. The day is just too full of things and the things do not leave room for prayer. The lesson of history is that those who have been great in prayer made time, often by early rising. The Bible injunction, early will I seek thee, is the base for their commitment and effective prayer is the result.

The need today is more than just a new commitment to find time. The need today is for craftsmen of prayer. Men and women who will go from prayer as practiced, to prayer as commanded by God. This difference is like the things I built compared to the things my dad crafted. I build cabinets, he crafted them. The craftsman of prayer goes far beyond normal practice. The craftsman strives to go beyond wherever he or she may be today in prayer, they seek to be the best.

This same spirit of the craftsman is needed in prayer today. We need men and women who will work to be the best. Those who will move from prayer to greater trust in God and obedience to all He commands for prayer. Men and women who will give of their life, physically and spiritually, to be the best in prayer they can be. We need men and women who espouse to be like George Muller, to be like Andrew Murray, to be like Rees Howells, to be the best in prayer. It is not competition, but commitment. This is commitment to step beyond the norm, and move day-by-day to new places in prayer. To step on toward being the best, the best you can be in prayer.

For some people this will be a call to prayer, to a real prayer life. Where daily they find (make) time for prayer. Where daily they yield to the teaching of the Holy Spirit and learn to pray. For others it is a call to step up, a longing for more of God and more from prayer. They know they must learn more about how to pray. For others this is a call to even greater strides, to go from prayer to the prayer of the craftsman, prayer that changes nations and people, prayer that hears from God and then moved the world for Him, by His power.

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:12-14 (NKJV)

Power for Life – Prayer

October 19th, 2009

During the great Welsh Revival a minister was said to be very successful in winning souls by one sermon that he preached—hundreds were converted. Far away in a valley news reached a brother minister of the marvelous success of this sermon. He desired to find out the secret of the man’s great success.—He walked the long way, and came to the minister’s poor cottage, and the first thing he said was: “Brother, where did you get that sermon?” He was taken into a poorly furnished room and pointed to a spot where the carpet was worn threadbare, near a window that looked out upon the everlasting hills and solemn mountains and said, “Brother, there is where I got that sermon. My heart was heavy for men. One night I knelt there—and cried for power as I never preached before. The hours passed until midnight struck, and the stars looked down on a sleeping world, but the answer came not. I prayed on until I saw a faint streak of grey shoot up, then it war silver—silver became purple and gold. Then the sermon came and the power came and men fell under the influence of the Holy Spirit.”                                   G. H. Morgan

Refreshed in God’s Promises

October 12th, 2009

The Old Testament records times when the Jewish people lost sight of the promises of God and their faith failed. A great example is the return of the spies who had gone to scout out the Promised Land. This land was called the Promised Land because God had promised the Jewish people a special place, a land that flowed with milk and honey. He had promised to take them there. This was a great promise of God. Caleb and Joshua had their eyes on the promise of God. They were ready to go and take the land. They were ready to stand firm in faith believing that if God promised He could and would do what He promised.

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

Numbers 13:30 (NKJV)

Unfortunately the other spies and the people did not keep their eyes on the promise. They saw the problems and hindrances that would defeat them, not the promises of God. Their faith failed. The question today is what about us. Will we be like Caleb and Joshua and keep our eyes on the promises of God or will we be like the other people. It is relatively easy to say we will be like Caleb and Joshua, especially when we are with God, such as in church or a time of worship. However, the problem is when we are in the tough times. When we are facing the issues of life and the problems thrown at us that are intended to kill, steal, and destroy our life and faith.

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.

Hebrews 4:1-2 (NKJV)

Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:11 (NKJV)

We can be like Caleb and Joshua and take the land. We can patiently endure the hard times and with the promises of God we are well able to overcome any obstacle the Devil can throw at us. Caleb saw the Promised Land and the promise of God and He was fully persuaded that God was able to go before them and take the land. We must be like Caleb and have our eyes on the promises of God. What has God promised you concerning your prayers? What has He said He would do? Then keep your eyes on Him and see Him do the great and mighty things He has promised.

After all the people except for Caleb and Joshua had died in the desert, God did just what He had promised He gave them the Promised Land. Caleb was right; God could and would do what He said. Although he was much older, he never took his eyes off the promise and he saw God’s promise fulfilled. We can and should do the same. God has promised, so we should and can walk with Him, keeping our eyes on Him and His promises. If we do, we will see Him do great things for us.

And that is refreshing!

Prayer Prep

September 15th, 2009

How would God have you prepare for prayer? What is He saying to you today? He has called us to be men and women of prayer, so what is your preparation for prayer?

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philip. 3:13-14 (NKJV)

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
Ephes. 4:1 (NKJV)

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephes. 6:11-12 (NKJV)

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Philip. 2:12-13 (NKJV)

God Answers Prayer! Even today!!!

August 8th, 2009

God answers prayer, is true in more recent times as well.  Read this account of the dark days of the late 1700s in America. This was a time when there seemed to be no hope. Then men began to pray and believe that God answers prayer.

In New England, there was a man of prayer named Isaac Backus, a Baptist pastor, who in 1794, when conditions were at their worst, addressed an urgent plea for prayer for revival to pastors of every Christian denomination in the United States. Churches knew that their backs were to the wall. All the churches adopted the plan until America, like Britain was interlaced with a network of prayer meetings, which set aside the first Monday of each month to pray. It was not long before revival came.

When the revival reached the frontier in Kentucky, it encountered a people really wild and irreligious. Congress had discovered that in Kentucky there had not been more than one court of justice held in five years. Peter Cartwright, Methodist evangelist, wrote that when his father had settled in Logan County, it was known as Rogue’s Harbour. The decent people in Kentucky formed regiments of vigilantes to fight for law and order, then fought a pitched battle with outlaws and lost.

There was a Scotch Irish Presbyterian minister named James McGready whose chief claim to fame was that he was so ugly that he attracted attention. McGready settled in Logan County, pastor of three little churches. He wrote in his diary that the winter of 1799 for the most part was ‘weeping and mourning with the people of God.’ Lawlessness prevailed everywhere. McGready was such a man of prayer that not only did he promote the concert of prayer every first Monday of the month, but he got his people to pray for him at sunset on Saturday evening and sunrise Sunday morning. Then in the summer of 1800 come the great Kentucky revival. Eleven thousand people came to a communion service. McGready hollered for help, regardless of denomination.

Out of that second great awakening, came the whole modern missionary movement and its societies. Out of it came the abolition of slavery, popular education, Bible Societies, Sunday Schools, and many social benefits accompanying the evangelistic drive.                                                                 J. Edwin Orr

The statement God answers prayer is truth throughout the history of the church. Dr. A. T. Pierson once said, “There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.”

How about today? There are many places around the world that seem more like this account of Logan County, than Heaven on earth. There is a desperate need for revival. The problems the church faces are impossible for man to over come. Without spiritual awakening the pitched battle for the life of men will be lost. So the question is will you pray? The question is not for those that have no faith in God’s willingness and ability to answer prayer. The question is will you commit your life and faith to the proposition that God answers prayer, and then pray?

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

Psalm 34:10 (NKJV)
