Pick Up the Pace

May 5th, 2010

In Rocky Mountain National Park, a part of Colorado, the weather can change very rapidly. The sun can be out and very warm and then in a moment the clouds can blow in. With very little warning it can rain or even snow. When there is a storm the lightening strikes seem very close and the thunder so loud it shakes you and rumbles on and on through the canyons. If you are on a trail, especially a trail high on a mountain, when a storm springs up, you need to get to a safe place immediately. In some places there is nowhere to go except get down the trail quickly. The experienced hiker watches for storms and knows to move quickly when needed. If you are on a trail you might need to quicken your pace; double time or even triple time pace might be required.

Life is very much like Rocky Mountain National Park, things change very rapidly. Many things in life seem to remain about the same; everyone needs the basics for life and living, like food and shelter. Receiving these daily needs requires faith and prayer. We must believe God has, is, and will provide for our every need. He is our source and provision. As Jesus taught us, we should spend time with Him praying for our daily needs and for those around us. So we pray; “Our Father, give us this day our daily needs”. This is the normal life of the believer and the life of prayer, the basics of faith and prayer, however there is more and things change.

There is so much to pray for and to pray about. Praying for all the situations that an individual faces requires a great deal of time, not to mention the needs of family, friends, and church. At times it seems this is all we can do; this takes our prayer time and our full effort. However, things change, there are storm clouds gathering and we must pick up the pace.

There is a need for men and women who will pray beyond the basics. There are people around us who need prayer, there are mission activities that need prayer, there are nations closed to the Gospel message that need prayer, and there are places in desperate need of revival that need prayer. All around us the situation of people daily grows graver. A generation is being swept into death and destruction; the storm clouds are growing and getting darker.

With these growing storm clouds there is an increasing need for prayer. Just like our climber who moves quickly down the trail to avoid a storm, we need to increase our prayers; to pick up the pace. The threat of the storms of life makes prayer imperative. All around us, in every country and nation there are people desperate for answers and help. They spread out before us like clouds and they are begging us to pick up the pace and pray.

This increase in prayer is not just putting in more time, but growing and maturing in prayer; in our efforts, skills, and faith. We must pick up our pace; not being satisfied with prayer as it has been, but move up to the place and pace the Holy Spirit has been preparing us for. The need is not for more of the same, but for effective, fervent prayers that avail much.

… The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

James 5:16 (NKJV)

Just like the man or woman on the trail moving along at a basic pace, when the clouds appear, they must move quicker. The clouds are appearing for us in prayer as well. The need has never been greater and the world is waiting. The world is asking; no it is begging, for you and me to pick up the pace and pray.

Prayer Fills Needs!

January 25th, 2010

There is much for us to do, for family, jobs, church, missions, and nation there are great needs. To be successful in the things we do we need prayer.

Prayer Gives Laborers

The number and efficiency of laborers depends on prayer, it depends on our prayers. In every measure of labor, prayer makes the difference.

night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?

1 Thessalonians 3:10 (NKJV)

Prayer Gives Potency

The might and strength of labor, the opportunity for labor increases by prayer.

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,
remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.
1 Thessalonians 1:2-4 (NKJV)

Prayer Opens Doors

Prayer opens wide their doors of opportunity for laborers. It provides for access, placing the laborer in position and opening hearts to the message. It gives a holy boldness, determination, resolve, and steadfastness.

praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Ephesians 6:18-20 (NKJV)

Prayer Gives Fruitfulness

Prayer makes productive the things we do, giving us fruit for our labor.

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Colossians 1:9-10 (NKJV)

Prayer Fills Needs

Praying men and women are needed in all fields of spiritual and secular. There is no position in the Church which should be filled, but by much prayer. There is no position that should be maintained, but by prayer. Praying men and women are needed for every business, as well as every church, to order and direct business and activity, not according to the maxims of this world, but according to Bible precepts.

Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (NKJV)

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Colossians 1:9 (NKJV)

Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Colossians 4:12 (NKJV)

The success of an enterprise and its efficiency are determined by prayer.

Life of a Disciple

December 4th, 2009

Effective prayer comes from a pure heart. A man or woman washed by the blood of Jesus; cleansed by the water of the Word of God. God has made provision so we can come to Him in prayer. However, there is a part for us to play as well. There is a Christian life, but beyond the basics there is the life of the disciple. Disciples choose to live as disciples. They live trying to do the things God’s way and try to observe and do everything He commands.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)

The life of the disciple is challenging. The disciple strives to be like Jesus and to be like Jesus is a tall order. The life of the disciple is one of choices, hopefully good choices. For example, the disciple can choose to deny himself the things of the world. He can choose to live as close to God as possible, making his prayers more effective prayers. With this choice, things that are okay for some people are not okay for the disciple. Things that would hinder prayer are removed.

If we confess our sins God is willing to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, but the position of effective prayer works to limit the areas where we must ask forgiveness, working to keep a close relationship with God. This is working to keep things from being a hindrance. One early Christian put the matter bluntly:

“There is a distinction between death and death. For this reason the disciples of Christ die daily torturing their desires and mortifying them according to the divine scriptures; for we have no part at all in shameless desires, or scenes impure, or glances lewd, or ears attentive to evil, lest our souls thereby be wounded.”

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:19-23 (NKJV)

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

1 John 3:21-22 (NKJV)

What are you doing to be a disciple?

Pray a Little?

July 9th, 2009

Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Col. 4:12 (NKJV)

For who or what are laboring fervently in prayer? The word, fervently, here means to struggle, to complete for a prize, to contend with an adversary, or to endeavor to accomplish something.

Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you. Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Romans 15:30-33 (NKJV)

Praying for Nations – Diet Food

June 27th, 2009

Our diet should include intercession with Jesus. His Word will also direct us to areas of prayer; areas He wants to deal with. Part of our prayer life should be joining with Jesus in His intercession. Today He is praying for the nations, there is a call for us to join with Him in His intercession. This intercession deals with a broad range of issues, from governments and leaders, to provision for missionaries. The Holy Spirit will lead us and guide us in the focus of Jesus’ prayers. He will show us how we can take our place along side Jesus and pray.

The Joy of Prayer

June 21st, 2009

After an epic struggle the match is all tied with moments left, the crowd stands and shouts as one. Our team moves the ball toward the goal. With a super human effort our star player blasts a shot on goal. For a moment everyone holds their breath, this may be our last chance. Time seems to stand still, until finally the ball flashes past the goalie. We have scored, we win!!! The joy is indescribable. We hug and kiss, even people we do not know. We win!!!

Prayer can and should be like this, a joy indescribable. The joy in prayer comes with answers. Like the scoring the winning goal, answers are the key. We really pray when we feel the burden of prayer, when we know the weight of praying until a difficulty is opened, an obstacle is removed, or a problem corrected. Prayer that accomplishes is hard work. It is hard work to press in, never stopping until God answers. As hard as the work of prayer is, joy is greater when the answer comes. After many a season of prayer, with faithful pressing in, the arrival of the answer is a time of great joy.

Prayer for answers is work, but it yields the joy of answers for all who will press in.

The Destroyed Generation

June 20th, 2009

It has always been a challenge for young people to deal with growing up. Growing up comes with many difficulties and problems. And this generation has more than its share to deal with. After World War I, many people called that generation of young people, those that were lost from many countries in the war, as the lost generation. The dreams and hopes of so many young people were lost on the battlefields. I am concerned that the current generation of young people may be called the destroyed generation.

As difficult as it has been to deal with growing up, there has always been help available. In many societies families helped young people grow up and for centuries the keystone for success for young people has been Jesus Christ. Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead to deal with the needs of people, young and old alike. He brings life, abundant life.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 10:10 (NKJV)

Today the thief is attempting to destroy a generation of young people. So many of the safeguards for young people have been removed or cast away and the thief is having a field day with young people. Despair and death seem to reign supreme over the life of so many of this generation. Evil is ripening all around and having its harvest. For many young people the desire for living is being killed, the vitality of life is being stolen, and the fabric of life is being destroyed. This is the lot of millions of young people; however, there is another possibility.

I ask you to pray. We can make a difference for this generation. The so called lost generation marched off to war with marching bands and patriotic salutes and they died. However, we need not stand by and watch this generation march off to drugs and suicide, to their destruction; we can pray. Our faithful, effective prayers can make a difference. It is by prayer that this generation will know abundant life in Christ Jesus. By prayer they will be seized from the grip of the thief and his destruction.

I know that many of you have a very full prayer life. You have many things that you pray for daily. I know that there are great and mighty things you labor daily for in prayer. However, I ask you to add to your prayer burden this generation of young people. I am asking that you would pray and fast for young people. Before us stands a massive field of people, ready for harvest. The question is how they will be harvested, will it be the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy or will they be gathered into the Kingdom of Heaven. Your prayers will make a difference.

Here is my request, pray for salvation and deliverance. Pray for young people desperate for answers and for life. This struggle that they are in today is life and death, pray for them to hear the good news of the Gospel and choose life. Pray that there would be confusion in the thief’s camp and his mission to destroy these young people would fail. Pray for ministries reaching out to young people. Pray for hearts of young people to be opened and receptive to the Gospel message. Pray for teachers and ministers to nurture and support these new converts as the move from death to life.

I ask you to pray for two groups of young people. First pray for the young people of your country. Each and every nation has difficult situations that young people face. Second, pray for the young people of another nation. The Holy Spirit is teaching us more and more about prayer and one of the key lessons is to pray for others. Let Him stretch you as you pray for the young people of another nation. There are young people on campuses of East Asia and young people in a school in Brazil. There are young people in a small town in Colorado and young people in cities and towns of Belarus. From Poland to Nepal there are young people who, as we sometimes say, “just chillin’ on the corner” who may not know it, but they are waiting for a harvest. How will they be harvested? Will you pray?

“Bear up the hands that hang down, by faith and prayer; support the tottering knees. Have you any days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere therein, and mercy will come down.” John Wesley

Which Kind are You?

June 5th, 2009

There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, “All right, then, have it your way.” C.S. Lewis

Today We Need Prayer

May 14th, 2009

Prayer is important; it is important for each of us and as a ministry. There is an important need in the Body of Christ today, it is praying for people. Jesus and Paul taught that Christians should pray for people, both for other Christians and for lost men and women. This is a part of the Christian life, we all should be praying for the needs of others. The Body of Christ is effective when the members praying for one another. If we are to walk as Jesus walked, if we are to be like Paul, we must be men and women of prayer and part of our prayer life should be praying for others.

Around the world, there are great needs for prayer. The events of life can be overwhelming, and in many places people cope with difficulties. There are areas of massive destruction, such as the destruction caused by a tsunami. Life can be very difficult. In many regions, becoming a Christian is fraught with danger; people are threatened and even face death. Provision for people and help for people comes through prayer. The turning of hearts of people to the Father; comes through prayer. To reach men and women, all our doings are necessary, Jesus said go and tell.

He called us to reach out to the lost and in all we do. Everything we do and everywhere we go is successful if we pray.

To reach men or women we must pray

To reach nations we must pray

Let us Pray!

Bold in Faith and Prayer

April 14th, 2009

The men and women of prayer are great risk takers. They put their faith to the test; they boldly proclaim their prayer request and then allow God to work. This boldness of faith takes responsibility and action. They take responsibility for praying; for seeking God and His answers. They take responsibility by taking action; they pray and obediently do what God desires of them. This should be the norm for all Christians.

If you were to die today, could they write your epitaph, “Bold in Faith and Prayer”? Take responsibility; be bold in prayer, confident in the power and ability of God to do what He has said He will do. It is His power and might that will carry the day. How about you, are you bold in faith and prayer?

in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.
Ephesians 3:12 (NKJV)

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:19-25 (NKJV)

The wicked flee when no one pursues, But the righteous are bold as a lion.
Proverbs 28:1 (NKJV)
